I've lost friends colleagues & seen death up close & personal within my industry BUT these are the risks which have to in these days been managed & ironed out.
It's not impossible; just a down right hard challenge and ALL need to buy into this.
You will like us all in management had those one or two or problem site people who just won't play ball, to those as Spock (Startrek) used to says "Live Long & Prosper !!! To those who play safe YES,
BUT to those who wont; I think NOT, you will either kill yourself or worse still kill or seriously injure some innocent person & ruin his life & family life. These are the risks & it is everyone's legal responsibility to say NO & STOP before breaking the law & causing either serious or fatal injury to themselves or others occurs.
DEATHS IN CONSTRUCTION
HSE STATISTICS 2014/12015
35 killed in UK during period 2014/2015
THAT'S 25% OF ALL DEATHS IN THE WORKPLACE FOR UK
UK Workplace rate of fatal injury of 0.46 deaths per 100,000 workers. The figure of 144 worker deaths in 2015/16 is 7% lower than the average for the past five years (155).
Areas fo my career which is part & parcel is HEALTH & SAFETY & over the years I have seen good, bad & ugly & down right foolish & criminal but in whatever way each person can, a life saved is a life saved & procedures & systems have to work with Safety, Quality & Management as a culture.
I have carried out many Health & Safety Inspections & some are mostly good but like all, you will always find something.
I've written countless Method Statements, Risk & C.O.S.H.H. Assessments,Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan, Pre-Construction Information Plan, F10 Notification to H.S.E.
MY MOTTO OF THE WORD
HAS FOR 20+ YEARS BEEN:-
Safety Always Firstly Encouraged Taught You
My "motto" for over 20+ years & was used very successfully in Malaysia as well as here in the UK.
In over 5 years in Malaysia, not one single accident on any of my sites under my command and with over 5 Million Man hours worked.
In essence, I assisted & worked closely with Malaysia's own HSE. (DOSH) & worked closely with local contractors and businesses and playing a key role in advancing Malaysia's H&S ethos to large & small business.
How can we help to be your Construction & Building Environmental, Health & Safety Advisors? Well, we'll list a brief outline of some of the services we can offer you and tailor made to your own requirements & timescales as well & EXPERT WITNESS.
I also have knowledge & a wide range of establishing Company procedures for all types of properties & building & construction sites for compliance to H&S, etc etc *(but not limited to) & construction administration & managing construction projects by establishing good working systems across the board to ensure cost effective working methods & quality & profits for our clients.
However, there are some who do fall foul of the Law and thus the inevitable happens, some I know have been visited by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) the governing body charged with ensuring all employers, clients, employees, manufacturers, suppliers etc comply with all aspects of Health & Safety Laws & Regulations.
In so doing, I have been called upon to assist such companies in successfully turning around their businesses around & with a wealth & knowledge i have also rectify the issues & the HSE have been assured of progress & actions being taken to correct that a non-conformance will re-occur.
This takes both parties to work at it.
So as you can see, it's a two-way step forward in achieving a long term relationship; BUT to see the Company grow and get that job satisfaction that maybe, just maybe, we can save one life or injury from ever happening and aim for a zero tolerance target on accidents within the workplace and our industry.
When called to such client, firstly we asses their immediate H&S issues, but take a long term view & build on our client relationship by working with them.
On some occasions this will involve the HSE & their respective visiting inspectors.
I have in my career undertaken as mediator & advisory for the client and ensure they have the systems in place both in theory but more importantly in practice such as physically on site.
NOTE: what to do when H.S.E. come to site:
On some occasions this will involve the HSE and their respective visiting inspectors.
We therefore, also undertake as mediator & advisory for the Client and ensure they have the
systems in place both in theory but more importantly in practice such as physically on site.
(permission has been given by the HSE on 01/12/10 to allow STOWE to put their website link on this web-page)
If you are visited by a HSE Inspector:
PLEASE CALL YOUR HSE ADVISOR IMMEDIATELY:
or myself (24hrs) Direct Dial Tel: ++(0) 0789 422 8222
Or E: firstname.lastname@example.org
Send me the full details of the HSE Inspection / visit and any reports or
Prohibition Notices etc. issued to you & the reasons why you had a H.S.E. visit.
Please note, when a Prohibition Notice is issued, it is likely the HSE
will close not just certain parts of the site BUT all of the site.
See also HSE website link on Prohibition Notice:
STOP WORK IMMEDIATELY !!!
DO NOT MOVE ANYTHING AS THE H.S.E. MAY INSIST YOU LEAVE
EVERYTHING AS IS IF THERE HAS BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT
FOR THEM TO COME BACK TO SITE TO INVESTIGATE.
The HSE may insist if you cannot prove you have that you will need further guidance for training on several aspects. Alot of effort also from the clients to take the commitment and to reap the rewards of their own efforts.
